Daphne's Greek Café - 2308 South Shore Center, Alameda CA 94501 (510) 769-1483

May 18, 2013 – We went back to South Shore Center this week to see how the new recycling and composting program is going. We visited Daphne’s and had lots of great Greek food:
  • Dolmas – Greta ordered dolmas and gave them four out of five stars. Vera liked them and said, “They taste like pickles!”

  • Lemon Chicken Soup – Greta says, “The soup is very good. One of my favorite combinations, lemons and chicken.” Even though she is usually a pescatarian, she made an exception today because of the cuisine.
  • Grilled chicken tenders and French fries – Hmmm…this is very similar to what Vera ordered at Jack in the Box. However, it was very fresh off the grill. Vera says, “Oh, it was so rosemary-y!”

  • Street Pita (Gyros) – Linnea says, “They were small, but good.” She had two sides of rice that filled her up. She is always famished after dance class.
Compost Report – Daphne’s is doing a great job recycling and composting. They use reusable dishes and cutlery to reduce waste even more. Folks that eat in do not bus their own tables, but leave the dishes for the wait staff. We spoke with a server and she said that the recycling and composting was very easy. We sneaked a peak into the bussing area and saw their great set up. We are so happy that they are doing so well. Congratulations!

May 5, 2013 – We did something a little different today and visited three different restaurants! Boogie Woogie Bagel Boy, Jack in the Box, and Julie’s. Everybody got what they wanted.
§  Jack in the Box – Vera had chicken fingers, French fries and ketchup. Vera says, “I really liked it and even Greta liked it and she made an exception and tried the chicken.” Greta says, “It was better than I expected.”
§  Boogie Woogie Bagel Boy – Greta had an egg bagel with cream cheese and lox. Greta says, “I think is really good. Just as good as House of Bagel (which is where I usually go). I would give it four out of five stars.”
§  Julie’s Coffee & Tea Garden – We all had delicious English breakfast tea with cream and sugar. It really hit the spot!
Compost Report – Julie’s was an early adopter on the compost program and has been recycling and composting for many years. We gave them a MASC brochure just in case they needed any internal containers to make things easier. Jack in the Box and Boogie Woogie Bagel Boy are not on the composting program yet. So we gave them the brochure so that they could talk to their managers about composting.
By the way, the two McDonald’s Restaurants in Alameda received Alameda County Business Efficiency Awards

for the great job they are doing recycling and composting (so we know that Jack in the Box should be able to get on the program soon).

Chipotle Mexican Grill - 2314 South Shore Center, Alameda CA 94501 (510) 337-1592

April 28, 2013 – We were so excited to visit Chipotle, our first visit to a restaurant at South Shore. Thanks to the Miss Alameda Says Compost Program, ACI, Jamestown (the property owners), Alameda Public Works, the Stopwaste Partnership, and Community Action for a Sustainable Alameda, all of the restaurants at South Shore Center are now recycling and composting. Yay!
To celebrate, we visited Chipotle and we had:
§  Bean, Cheese and Rice Burrito – Vera says it was really good, but hers exploded on her. Greta’s burrito also unfolded on her, but otherwise it was good. She gives it 3.5 starts out of 5.
§  Sofritas Bowl – Sofritas are shredded tofu and a really good vegan alternative to meat. The bowl is a huge portion which includes rice, beans, cheese and veggies.

§  Guacamole, salsa and chips – These are really good at Chipotle. Yum!
Compost report – Chipotle is doing a really great job with recycling and composting in the back of the house. In the dining room you can recycle your bottles and cans, but they are still working on recycling and composting stations for folks that eat in. We brought all of our stuff home to recycle and compost because at Chipotle you can have Zero Waste!
